Community Based Education

Community Based education activities emphasize facilitating community-based experiences for health professions students. The implementation of education activities requires the development and maintenance of rotation sites in rural and underserved communities. Piney Woods AHEC collaborates with various medical and allied health schools with in the state of Texas to assist in placing students in the East Texas area. Piney Woods AHEC believes that these community-based rotations provide good long-term results in recruiting healthcare professionals to rural areas.
Major Emphasis of CBE:
- Establish with Clinical Coordinators at various medical/allied health schools:
- Clerkship site needs
- Recruit Preceptors
- Coordinate with Preceptors in the Community:
- Coordinate between schools and preceptor schedules
- Collect and distribute any necessary paperwork
- Provide Student support:
- Conduct community/site orientation as appropriate
- Encourage students to review possible job opportunites while in region
- Liaison between school/preceptor and student as need arises
- Assist with identifying housing within region
